The dielectric elastomeric actuators are an emerging class of polymer actuators. These polymers can execute large strains at high voltages. They basic variation among different actuators is in their geometry. Currently different geometries are being investigated for better efficiency, displacement, and force requirements. Due to their fully polymer construction it has the advantage of being safe from magnetic fields, and due to its simple operation methodology controlling electronic requirements can be reduced. This makes it suitable for the use in MRI (Magnetic resonance Imaging) environments. As it is extremely cheap it can be made disposable and help in reducing cross infections and improve sterility. The actuators of this kind can be used for applications extremely specific for medical device industry like positioning of devices. So there is a requirement of having these types of actuators in the medical device domain and need to be addressed

Stacked dielectric elastomer actuator for tensile force ~ So far, a variety of different types of dielectric elastomer (DE) actuators have demonstrated the versatile capabilities of this actuator technology (e.g. , ).Due to their intrinsic compliance and unique deformation potential, soft dielectric EAPs are promising for compliant, lightweight structures in the macro-scale, which can perform continuous displacements.

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators / Soft Robotics Toolkit ~ Dielectric elastomers actuators (DEA) are a class of electroactive polymers which work based on inducing of deformation with an electric field, which was demonstrated in 1880 by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen by spraying charges on a piece of natural rubber (Röntgen 1880). A common design of DEAs is to sandwich a soft insulating elastomer membrane between two compliant electrodes.

On the Properties of Dielectric Elastomer Actuators and ~ detailed analytical and experimental studies of the failure modes and performance boundaries of DEAs are codified into design principles for these actuators. Analysis shows that the performance of DEAs made with highly viscoelastic is governed by four key mechanisms: pull-in failure, dielectric strength failure, viscoelasticity and current leakage. A design map showing the effect of these four .

Dielectric elastomer actuators with elastomeric electrodes ~ For many applications of dielectric elastomer actuators, it is desirable to replace the carbon-grease electrodes with stretchable, solid-state electrodes. Here, we attach thin layers of a conducting silicone elastomer to prestrained films of an acrylic dielectric elastomer and achieve voltage-actuated areal strains over 70. The influence of the stiffness of the electrodes and the prestrain of .

Compact Dielectric Elastomer Linear Actuators ~ Actuators 1. Introduction The landmark papers by Pelrine et al. marked the beginning of the use of dielectric elastomer (DE) actuators (and sensors) for soft robotics.[1] They showed that a voltage applied through the thickness of a soft material could produce large strains as a result of the Maxwell stress between charges on the two electrodes.

Dielectric elastomers - Wikipedia ~ Dielectric elastomer actuators are to be designed so as to avoid the phenomenon of dielectric breakdown in their whole course of motion. In addition to the dielectric breakdown, DEAs are susceptible to another failure mode, referred to as the electromechanical instability, which arises due to nonlinear interaction between the electrostatic and the mechanical restoring forces. In several cases .
